National government completes the Emgwen Affordable Housing Project, providing over two hundred new homes to families in Nandi County as the state accelerates its primary residential infrastructure rollout.

President William Ruto officially handed over the Emgwen Affordable Housing Project to new residents in Nandi County on Thursday, marking the completion of 220 residential units designed to ease the local housing deficit. The ceremony, held on March 12, 2026, saw several families receive keys to their new properties under the state-backed Boma Yangu initiative.

The project consists of multiple multi-storey blocks arranged in a gated community layout. Aerial views of the site show a completed landscape featuring paved internal access roads, green spaces, and dedicated water storage infrastructure. The architectural design follows a standardized model seen in other recent government-led residential developments across the country, focusing on high-density living to maximize land use efficiency.

During the site visit, the President met with Pastor Elly Kiprop Bett and his family, who were among the first cohort of homeowners to move into the estate. The family hosted the presidential delegation for tea, providing a practical look at the interior finishing and utility connectivity of the units. This personal interaction highlighted the transition of the project from a construction site to a liveable neighborhood.

The Emgwen development is part of a broader national strategy to deliver low-cost housing through a mix of public and private financing. By focusing on Nandi County, the government aims to decentralize urban development and provide modern amenities to regions outside the primary metropolitan hubs of Nairobi and Mombasa.

Construction at the site involved a significant number of local laborers and artisans, a standard requirement for the current administration’s infrastructure projects. The delivery of these 220 units is expected to provide a template for similar upcoming phases in the North Rift region.

Technical specifications of the Emgwen site include reinforced concrete frames and masonry infill, topped with contemporary roofing tiles. The blocks are positioned to allow for natural lighting and ventilation, while the perimeter is secured to ensure a safe environment for the new residents.

As the handover process continues, the Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development will oversee the management of common areas and the integration of the new community into the existing local administrative structures. The completion of this site follows several months of intensive onsite activity aimed at meeting the 2026 delivery timelines.

Government officials present at the event noted that the occupancy of the Emgwen units represents a tangible shift in the local property market, making modern housing accessible to middle and low-income earners who previously relied on informal or substandard rentals.
