To address the sharp rise in vehicle volumes across the national road network, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) issued a formal public notice on December 21, 2025. This advisory comes as heavy traffic begins to impact major corridors, with the authority identifying road safety as a collective responsibility during the Christmas and New Year period.
Acting Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli stated that the agency is prioritizing smooth travel by guiding the public on several operational safety measures. Motorists are being encouraged to utilize alternative routes where available to bypass known congestion points. This recommendation follows reports of significant delays on primary routes such as the Nairobi-Nakuru highway, where increased holiday travel has led to extended transit times.
The authority has specifically warned against lane indiscipline and overlapping, which have been cited as primary contributors to gridlock. Drivers are urged to observe posted speed limits, obey traffic signs, and avoid reckless overtaking. KeNHA also noted that motorists should plan their journeys well in advance to ensure they allow for adequate travel time given the current density of traffic.
Specific directives were issued for Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operators, who are required to adhere to approved passenger capacity limits and use designated pick-up and drop-off points. The notice further emphasizes that all drivers must be well-rested before starting their journeys and remain sober and fit to drive at all times.
KeNHA indicated that these measures are part of a broader commitment to secure a safe holiday travel experience. The authority is working to manage the infrastructure pressures caused by the festive rush while ensuring that road users can reach their destinations safely.
