Kenya is advancing plans for a mausoleum and tomb to honour the late Raila Amolo Odinga. The site is at Kangβo ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County. Raila was a towering figure in Kenyaβs politics for decades.
Odinga served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013. He was a long-time opposition leader who fought for multiparty democracy. His death in October 2025 at age 80 while receiving treatment in India shocked the nation.
The country held a state funeral with massive public mourning. Thousands gathered to pay respects. Raila was laid to rest beside his father Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, bringing national attention to the family home.
The National Museums of Kenya is leading the mausoleum project. The tomb will measure six square metres and feature imported Italian Carrara marble cladding. This premium stone is prized for its white colour and veining.
The entire tomb structure will use first-class Carrara marble on all surfaces. It will sit within a stone-walled mausoleum with granite flooring. Access comes through a grand Lamu hardwood door with traditional carvings.
A life-size buffalo sculpture, known as Jowi in Luo culture, will be a key feature. Jowi symbolises strength, courage and leadership. It was central to Railaβs public persona and dirges.
External walls will use natural blue quarry stones. The design blends Kenyan cultural elements with high-quality international materials. It aims to create a lasting memorial to Railaβs legacy.
The National Treasury has released funds for the works. Tenders for construction have been opened. The project includes renovation of the nearby Jaramogi mausoleum.
Railaβs contributions to democracy and development remain widely remembered. The mausoleum will serve as a site to preserve his history for future generations. Construction is expected to proceed following contractor selection.
