State-backed power producer KenGen has launched recruitment for a managing director to succeed Peter Njenga as he prepares to exit.

The Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has officially opened the search for a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD) to take over leadership of the state-controlled power generator. The executive recruitment drive comes as the current officeholder, Peter Njenga, prepares for his retirement after leading the organization through key operational phases.

Power sector stakeholders and industry observers are tracking the executive transition closely, given the firm's critical role in national infrastructure. Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) accounts for the vast majority of electricity fed into the national grid, managing major geothermal, hydroelectric, wind, and thermal generation assets across the country.

The board has initiated the recruitment process to select a qualified executive who will steer the company's ambitious clean energy development program. Under current strategic plans, the company is actively expanding its geothermal capacity in the Olkaria field, while pursuing regional diversification strategies, including drilling services and consultancy contracts across the Horn of Africa.

The incoming executive will inherit a portfolio heavily focused on green power expansion, grid stability, and infrastructure modernization projects. Leadership transitions at the state generator traditionally draw significant attention from investors, contractors, and energy sector partners, as the company commands a central position in East Africa's broader utility and construction landscape.

Peter Njenga took the helm at the power producer following extensive experience within Kenya's broader electricity sector, including senior roles at Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC). During his tenure at Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), the firm maintained focus on geothermal development and international expansion drives.

Applicants interested in leading the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) listed utility have been invited to submit their credentials in line with public governance guidelines. The recruitment process is expected to follow standard competitive public service procurement and corporate hiring protocols to identify the next executive leader before the planned transition date.

Until the recruitment process concludes and a formal appointment is announced by the board, the existing executive structure remains in place to oversee daily operations and ongoing generation projects. Further updates regarding the candidate shortlist and final appointment are anticipated in upcoming official communications from the board of directors.
