The seven-storey Gikomba Quarry Road Market Block D is nearing completion, promising a safe, modern, and structured trading space for over 1,700 traders.

The construction of the seven-storey Gikomba Quarry Road Market Block D is rapidly approaching its conclusion, marking a profound change for one of Nairobi’s most central and tumultuous trading hubs. It serves as a critical step in transforming an informal enterprise long characterised by congestion, dilapidated structures, and repeated fire disasters into a structured and dignified economic activity.

The project aligns directly with H.E. President William Ruto’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, or BETA, which seeks to formalise and uplift the 'hustler' economy. For decades, the traders of Gikomba have operated under harsh conditions, contending with makeshift shacks and muddy, narrow pathways that made doing business a constant struggle.

The building's design is comprehensive, incorporating features that include a dedicated basement parking lot, amenities such as a kitchen and refuse collection area, and community-focused facilities like a day-care centre and a youth centre. Crucially, the addition of a cold room and a dedicated hardware section addresses specific logistical needs of the market.

The construction process has generated hundreds of employment opportunities, with official reports indicating that 70 skilled and 140 unskilled workers, many of whom are youth and women from the surrounding community.

The Gikomba Block D is not merely a building, but an infrastructural investment poised to inject stability and new economic vitality into the heart of Nairobi's entrepreneurial spirit, creating a robust and permanent home for thousands of small-scale businesses.
