Imported Steel Girders Arrive as Enziu River Bridge Hits 70% Completion

Contractors clear imported Chinese steel components to advance the infrastructure project triggered by a fatal 2021 flooding incident.

The construction of the Enziu River bridge in Mwingi, Kitui County, has reached 70 percent completion following the arrival of specialized structural components on site.

Specialized steel girders imported from China recently cleared customs and have been cleared for placement at the crossing location.

Works on the site were triggered by a December 2021 flash flood tragedy, when a local bus was swept away by floodwaters, resulting in 33 fatalities. Government agencies initiated the infrastructural response to prevent recurring hazards along the river corridor during heavy rainfall seasons.

The project execution is handled under a contract worth Ksh700 million awarded to Kiu Construction Limited, a local Kenyan civil engineering firm. Government oversight for the infrastructure construction is supervised by the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA).

Engineering activities on the structure officially started in 2022. The development stalled temporarily during its implementation period before resuming active structural work on the main deck assembly.

The arrival and clearance of the imported steel girders mark a critical technical phase for the civil engineering team on location. Placement of these steel girders forms the core framework required to support the heavy deck loads across the riverbed.

Local transport links across the Enziu River have historically faced severe disruptions during seasonal rains, which creates hazardous conditions for public passenger vehicles and local residents attempting to cross the channel.

The progress achieved so far positions the engineering team to move toward the final structural assembly stages. Completion will establish an elevated crossing, which separates vehicular traffic from seasonal riverbed flooding patterns.
