The Kenya National Highways Authority has initiated the upgrading of the 13-kilometre Kamuwongo-Kandwia road to bitumen standards following the award of a contract valued at over Sh900 million.

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has officially commenced the bitumen-standard upgrade of the Kamuwongo-Kandwia road in Kitui County. This 13-kilometre section forms a vital link within the B64 road corridor, which connects Mwingi town to the broader Ena-Chiakariga-Meru network. The project was formally launched by President William Ruto during a recent development tour of the Lower Eastern region.

The contract for the works was awarded on September 24, 2025, with a project value exceeding Sh900 million. The scope of the project involves converting the existing gravel surface into a paved highway, a move expected to stabilize transport costs and improve reliability for motorists traveling between the Thika-Garissa (A3) highway and the commercial hubs of the northern belt.

Located within Kyuso Ward in Mwingi North, the upgrade begins at the Kamuwongo trading center, where the current pavement ends and extends northeast toward Kandwia. This segment is part of the larger Mwingi-Kamuwongo-Irira-Ciangera corridor, which serves as a secondary transit route for freight and agricultural produce moving between Kitui, Embu, and Meru counties.

The engineering specifications for the B64 section include the construction of a standard 7-meter-wide carriageway with 2-meter shoulders on each side. Local residents and business operators in Kamugongi and surrounding areas have noted that the previous gravel state of the road often became impassable during rainy seasons, hindering the movement of livestock and fuel supplies.

This infrastructure development is funded under the national government’s development vote for the 2025/2026 financial year. It is one of several road projects currently being implemented in Kitui County to enhance connectivity within the Mombasa-Isiolo-Moyale corridor.
