Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) has launched a Ksh 500 million student hostel project under the Affordable Housing Programme. Presided over by PS Charles Hinga and Dr. Beatrice Inyangala, the initiative aims to build 1,200 modern rooms in 18 months, addressing accommodation shortages and enhancing security for students in Kakamega County.

Principal Secretaries Charles Hinga (Housing and Urban Development) and Dr. Beatrice Inyangala (Higher Education and Research) recently presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for a massive new student hostel project at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) in Kakamega County.

This ambitious development, valued at Ksh 500 million, marks a significant milestone in the government's Affordable Housing Programme (AHP), specifically tailored to address the chronic shortage of student accommodation in Kenyan tertiary institutions.

The project is set to be a game-changer for the university community in Lurambi Constituency. In its first phase, the initiative aims to deliver 1,200 modern, secure, and affordable rooms within an 18-month timeline, with excavators already on site.

This development comes as a relief to thousands of students who have historically grappled with the challenges of exorbitant private rentals and insecurity in off-campus housing.

The initiative aligns seamlessly with the national government's directive to expand institutional housing, ensuring that learners have access to conducive living environments that support their academic success.

Speaking during the launch, the delegation highlighted that the project is not merely about bricks and mortar but about dignity and safety for the "comrades." The new hostels are designed to be ultra-modern, featuring necessary amenities that cater to the needs of the contemporary student.

The strategic location within the university precincts will significantly reduce the daily commute for students, allowing them to focus more on their studies and less on logistical hurdles.

MMUST Vice Chancellor Prof. Solomon Shibairo welcomed the project, terming it a long-awaited solution to the accommodation crisis that has plagued the institution as student numbers continue to surge. He expressed gratitude to the government for prioritizing MMUST in this national rollout.

The project is expected to stimulate the local economy in Kakamega County during the construction phase by creating jobs and utilizing local materials, further fulfilling the economic empowerment pillars of the Affordable Housing Programme.

As the excavators roar to life at the site, the university fraternity anticipates a new era where quality education is complemented by quality living standards.
