Construction of the modern Ndhiwa ESP Market in Homa Bay is 80% complete. Learn about the 1,200-trader capacity facility, its amenities including an ICT centre and cold room, and its economic impact on the region.

The ongoing construction of the Ndhiwa ESP Market in Homa Bay County is rapidly taking shape as one of the most transformative infrastructure projects currently under implementation in the region.

Spearheaded by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, the project has made significant strides since breaking ground earlier this year.

The development is poised to redefine the local trading landscape by providing a permanent and dignified environment for commerce.

Works on the modern market complex commenced in March 2024, and the project has moved swiftly through its development phases. Recent reports from the site indicate that the facility is now 80 percent complete.

Once the facility is handed over, it will accommodate a total of 1,200 traders. The architectural plan divides this capacity evenly across two levels, with 600 traders set to occupy the ground floor and another 600 designated for the upper floor.

This organization aims to eliminate congestion and provide a conducive atmosphere for both buyers and sellers in the area.

Beyond the trading stalls, the project is designed to function as a full-fledged community hub through the inclusion of various modern amenities.

The finished complex will feature a dedicated ICT centre and a social hall to foster community interaction. To support the preservation of fresh produce, the facility will include a cold room.

Additional features include a restaurant, a modern ablution block, and a children's playground, which adds a unique social value to the infrastructure.

The construction phase of the project has directly engaged between 25 and 30 workers, with a majority drawn from local youth and women demographics. This engagement has provided crucial employment and skills development opportunities for the residents.

The economic impact has also rippled outward to benefit suppliers of building materials, food vendors, and transport operators whose businesses have seen increased activity.

Upon its completion, the Ndhiwa ESP Market is expected to act as a mega economic catalyst that will empower hundreds of traders and sustain countless livelihoods within the value chain.
