The Government of Kenya's commitment to delivering on the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) is taking tangible shape in Homa Bay County with the near-completion of the Kobodo ESP Market in Ndhiwa Constituency.
This modern construction project is intended to directly uplift the livelihoods and empower small-scale traders across rural Kenya. Commenced in June 2024, the facility is designed to significantly boost local commerce by accommodating a total of 207 traders.
The ground floor layout has been allocated 114 stalls, complementing the 93 spaces situated on the upper floor. This capacity ensures a substantial upgrade from previous trading environments, providing structure and security for numerous businesses.
The final stages of construction are now intensely focused on critical internal and external works necessary for handover. These current activities encompass the installation of electrical wiring throughout the building, the comprehensive finishing of the waste cubicle, the final fabrication of the trader stalls, and the excavation of the septic tank.
Further enhancing its functionality is an ICT hall, designed to introduce technology and digital skills to small entrepreneurs, alongside a kitchen facility that caters to daily operational needs. These provisions collectively aim to foster an efficient and contemporary trading environment.
Crucially, the construction phase has already delivered considerable socio-economic benefits at the local level. At the height of the building period, the project directly engaged between 30 and 40 individuals. The vast majority of those hired were locals, ensuring that investment was channeled directly back into the community.
This initial impact reinforces the transformative power of strategic government investments at the grassroots, linking infrastructure development with direct community empowerment, a key promise under the DeliveringThePlan initiative.
