President William Ruto has reinforced the government’s commitment to expanding Kenya’s road network during an intensive development tour of Murang’a County. The visit focused on commissioning several strategic infrastructure projects intended to link rural areas with major commercial hubs.
According to data released during the visit, the government is investing Sh27 billion into the region’s development, with a significant portion allocated to road construction and the improvement of healthcare and education facilities.
The President emphasized that the delivery of these projects is part of a long-standing development agenda. He noted that the relationship with the region is built on a track record of visible work, including the upgrading of rural roads to bitumen standards.
Accompanied by Cabinet Secretaries Alice Wahome and William Kabogo, along with Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata, the President inspected ongoing works and launched new sections of the network. These projects are managed through the State Department for Roads and the Kenya Rural Roads Authority.
The infrastructure push in Murang'a follows a broader national strategy. Earlier this month, the government announced the release of Sh20 billion to contractors nationwide to ensure that pending road projects are completed without further delays.
In Murang’a, the focus remains on ensuring that agricultural produce can reach markets efficiently. Local leaders at the event noted that improved roads would directly reduce transport costs for farmers and ease access to essential social amenities for residents.
President Ruto stated that the government would not be deterred from its development path by political opposition. He maintained that the progress of every leader would be judged by their track record in delivering such tangible infrastructure.
The State Department for Roads highlighted that these investments are a catalyst for economic expansion. By improving connectivity between counties, the government aims to create a seamless network that supports inclusive growth and local livelihood improvements.
This visit to Central Kenya aligns with recent inspections in Kisii and Western regions, where the President has also flagged off various bitumen standard upgrades. The administration has set a long-term goal of tarmacking 28,000 kilometers of road over the next decade.
Residents in Murang’a town and surrounding constituencies observed the commissioning of equipment and the unveiling of project plaques, signaling the immediate commencement of works on several key arteries within the county.
