The national government has finished work on the Diani Modern Market in Mvindeni, Kwale County, providing over 200 stalls and specialized cold storage to support hundreds of local traders.

Construction works at the Diani Modern Market in Mvindeni, Kwale County, have concluded, with the facility now remaining on standby for official commissioning. The completion of the project marks the delivery of a key infrastructure pledge directed at the informal trade sector within the coastal region.

The project was executed under the national government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, aimed at transitioning small-scale traders from makeshift roadside setups into a structured commercial environment. For years, traders in the Diani and Mvindeni areas have operated in temporary structures, often exposed to the elements and lacking basic sanitation. This new facility is designed to formalize these operations by providing a permanent, weather-protected space for business.

Architectural plans for the market reveal a multi-level approach to high-density trading. The facility features 219 designated stalls, though authorities estimate that the layout can accommodate between 300 and 500 traders through shared spaces and varied outlet types. The design specifically caters to fresh produce sellers, commonly referred to as mama mboga, while providing separate zones for other retail businesses.

Beyond basic vending stalls, the Diani Modern Market incorporates several specialized amenities that are often missing from traditional municipal markets. To reduce post-harvest losses, which have historically impacted the margins of coastal produce sellers, the state has installed cold storage facilities. This allows for the preservation of perishable goods, enabling traders to manage their inventory more effectively over several days.

The inclusion of social infrastructure within the market footprint reflects a shift in how modern Kenyan markets are being designed. The facility houses a dedicated mothers’ room to support breastfeeding traders, an ICT hub intended to facilitate digital commerce, and a food court. Additionally, a 200-capacity social hall has been built into the complex, providing a venue for community meetings and traders' association activities.

Security and administrative oversight for the project are being managed through the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration. This department is tasked with ensuring the long-term protection of the infrastructure and providing a stable environment for daily operations. Coordination between national and county leadership remains a focal point as the transition of traders into the new stalls begins.

Local leaders in Kwale have noted that the market’s location in Mvindeni is strategic for capturing the high traffic flow between the Likoni-Lunga Lunga highway and the Diani tourism circuit. By centralizing trade in a modern hub, the government expects to improve revenue collection for the County while lowering the operational risks for individual entrepreneurs.

As the site awaits its formal opening ceremony, the focus shifts to the fair allocation of stalls. The national government has emphasized that the priority will be given to the grassroots traders who currently occupy the informal sector. The commissioning of the Diani facility is part of a broader nationwide rollout of modern markets intended to bridge the infrastructure gap in Kenya’s rural and peri-urban trading centers.
