Construction of the Sh332 million South B Modern Market has entered the casting phase, with a 24-hour work schedule employing 450 people to meet a 12-month completion deadline.

Construction of the South B Modern Market in Nairobi has reached a new phase of activity as casting works commence on the multi-storey structure. The State Department for Housing and Urban Development is overseeing the project, which is designed to consolidate small-scale trade within a dedicated facility. Recent site reports indicate that the total workforce has grown to approximately 450 personnel, including onsite supervisors and technical teams.

The development is being executed under a 24-hour construction cycle to adhere to a strict 12-month delivery timeline set during the groundbreaking in late January 2025. This continuous schedule utilizes a rotating labor force of 53 workers during the day and 81 at night. Government data shows a high level of participation from youth and women in these shifts, integrating local labor into the building and construction value chain.

Architectural plans for the facility specify a multi-level layout intended to house 1,050 traders. The ground floor is designated for grocery vendors, while the first floor will be allocated to second-hand clothing traders. Upper levels are planned for additional stall space, with the top floor designed to accommodate restaurants. This configuration aims to establish a commercial center capable of operating around the clock once fully commissioned.

The Sh332 million project is one of several strategic markets being developed across Nairobi County. Beyond providing trading stalls, the design incorporates a crèche, a health room, and an ICT hub to support the social needs of the vendors. By moving traders from the road corridors into a managed environment, the State Department expects to improve urban order and safety within the South B ward.
