The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced plans to construct three highways across the Rift Valley region. The projects will connect six counties: Nandi, Bomet, Kericho, Elgeyo Marakwet, Uasin Gishu and Narok.
One highway will run from Kenegut Border through Mbogo Valley, Kamelilo, Maraba, Kabirer, Sirwa, Lessos, Chuyiet, Kipka bus and Nyaru. This 150-kilometre road will link Kericho, Nandi, Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet counties. KeNHA described it as a link between the South and North Rift Valley, with expected improvements to access for rural communities.
A second project, stretching more than 110 kilometres, will connect Kericho and Nandi counties. It will pass through towns including Ainamoi and Kipkelion West. The road is intended to support trade and transportation in the area.
The third highway will cover 143 kilometres from Embomoss through Koiwa, Chebole, Siongiroi, Labotiet, Gorgor, Ambosi, Dikirr, Kilgoris, Enoo Saen, Anganga and Mariwa. This route will join Bomet and Narok counties in the southern Rift Valley. KeNHA said it should ease travel between the counties, along with better connections toward Kericho and Nakuru for businesses and residents.
KeNHA stated on Tuesday, January 20, that the three projects will draw funding from the World Bank and the African Development Bank. Construction works are expected to begin once preparations advance. No specific start dates or contractors were named in the announcement.
