The 400-bed Mama Rachel Ruto Specialist Hospital in Mutuini, Nairobi, is 89% complete, representing a major step toward Kenya's Universal Health Coverage goal.

The Government is making a deliberate investment in modern health infrastructure to deliver Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and improve access to quality healthcare for all Kenyans. This strategic focus aims to make comprehensive medical services a reality for every citizen, moving beyond current healthcare constraints. This ensures a higher standard of medical care will be accessible across the country, especially in the populous capital.

The proposed Mama Rachel Ruto Specialist Hospital at Mutuini in Nairobi County is a powerful symbol of this commitment, currently standing at an impressive 89% completion. This three-storey, 400-bed facility is projected to serve up to 1.5 million patients annually, a massive boost to the region’s healthcare capacity. Construction is advancing rapidly, with workers concentrating on critical interior finishing touches.

The hospital’s interior design is strategically mapped out for specialized services across its levels. The first floor will be a central hub for surgical and maternal care, housing cutting-edge operating theatres, dedicated maternity and newborn units, and an in-pharmacy for inpatients. The second floor is allocated for the most critical patient care, accommodating Intensive Care Unit (ICU) wards, the High Dependency Unit (HDU), and a vital renal unit for patients needing dialysis.

Comprehensive diagnostic and outpatient services will be conveniently located on the ground floor. Patients will access a full range of radiology services, including CT scans, X-rays, and ultrasounds, which are crucial for quick diagnoses. The ground floor will also feature six dispensing areas, a large laboratory capable of processing an impressive 400 tests per hour, and a nutrition department.

Further outpatient services will include five consultation rooms and two minor surgery theatres for less invasive procedures. The hospital also shows a specific dedication to infant health by incorporating two specialized human milk banks to support its neonatal care unit. The Mutuini facility is poised to become a monumental asset in Kenya’s journey toward true Universal Health Coverage.
