The Nairobi Railway City Project launched on February 24, 2022, by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, is one of Kenya’s most ambitious urban transformation initiatives. Covering 425 acres around the old Nairobi Central Railway Station, the project aims to create a modern green and smart city district that integrates transport, business, and affordable housing. Under President William Ruto’s administration, construction has accelerated, symbolizing Kenya’s commitment to sustainable urban renewal.
At the core of the project is the reconstruction of the Nairobi Central Railway Station into a world-class multimodal transport hub that connects commuter trains, the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, matatus, taxis, and non-motorized transport lanes. Surrounding the station will be a vibrant business district featuring office complexes, hotels, and shopping centers, alongside modern residential estates and public parks designed to promote walkability and green living.
The project, valued at approximately KSh 35 billion, is being implemented through a Public-Private Partnership between the Government of Kenya and the United Kingdom, supported by UK Export Finance and Atkins Global, the British firm behind the master plan. As of October 2025, the project is about 35% complete, with major works focusing on the new terminal, access roads, and utility systems.
The first phase is expected to be ready by mid-2026. Once complete, the Nairobi Railway City will create over 25,000 jobs, decongest the CBD and enhance Nairobi’s position as East Africa’s premier business and transport hub. It represents Kenya’s vision for a modern capital that blends heritage with innovation and connects people commerce and opportunity through sustainable urban design.
