Interior Ministry to Construct Sh450 Million Security Command Center in Shakahola

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has confirmed the government will invest Sh450 million to establish a permanent security command center within the Shakahola forest. The facility aims to provide a long-term security presence in the expansive Chakama Ranch, where hundreds of bodies were recovered following the activities of a religious cult.

The construction of the command center is part of a broader infrastructure strategy to ensure the 50,000-acre forest is no longer used for criminal activities. This project includes the development of more than 100 kilometers of security roads. These routes will be mapped out to create access points every few kilometers, allowing for rapid response and consistent patrols across the rugged terrain.

Beyond the command center itself, the government plans to upgrade the Malindi-Lango Baya road. This arterial link is essential for moving construction materials and personnel to the site. The road improvement is expected to facilitate better connectivity between the security installations and the main transport corridors in Kilifi County.

Kithure Kindiki noted that the infrastructure is necessary to transform the area into a national memorial site. Once the security facilities are complete, the government intends to designate the forest as a protected zone. This move is intended to prevent unauthorized settlement and ensure the grounds are preserved in honor of those who lost their lives.

Engineers and surveyors are currently involved in the multi-agency effort to map out the exact coordinates for the new administrative blocks and staff quarters. The project will house officers from the National Police Service and other specialized units. These teams will be tasked with the permanent monitoring of the ranch to prevent any resurgence of clandestine activities.

The Ministry of Interior expects the rollout of these infrastructure projects to begin immediately. Funds have been earmarked to cover the initial phases of road grading and the setting up of temporary housing for the construction crews. This investment represents a significant shift in how the state manages large, isolated parcels of land that have previously lacked government oversight.

By opening up the forest through systematic road construction, the state intends to make the entire ranch visible and accessible. This approach addresses the logistical hurdles faced during the initial search and rescue operations, where thick vegetation and a lack of clear paths hindered the movement of emergency services and forensic teams.
