President William Ruto has officially launched a major rehabilitation and beautification project for the vital Mombasa Road-Uhuru Highway corridor, spanning the busy stretch between Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and ABC Place in Westlands.
The comprehensive works, announced during the 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations, are slated to commence immediately this December, signaling the government's commitment to modernizing the capital’s central transport network just in time for the festive travel season.
The decision to undertake this extensive facelift follows concerns that the lower highway had experienced significant deterioration and increasing strain since the completion and operationalization of the Nairobi Expressway.
President Ruto emphasized that the primary objective is to re-carpet the entire section from JKIA to ABC Place and simultaneously conduct extensive beautification works. The goal is clear: to ensure Nairobi’s main entry and exit artery reflects the stature and dignity expected of Kenya's capital city, enhancing both the aesthetic and functionality of the crucial pathway.
Beyond this central corridor, the government is actively pursuing a citywide infrastructure revival. Collaborating closely with the Nairobi County Government, the administration has successfully revived previously stalled road works and re-engaged contractors to resume construction across various constituencies.
A significant 60 kilometres of roads are currently under active development within the city, covering key areas such as Mama Wahu Road in Dagoretti South, the Bypass - Mihang'o Link, and Road C in Embakasi South.
Contractors have also been recalled to complete critical upgrades along Valley Road, Ngong Road, and Haile Selassie Avenue, demonstrating a holistic approach to network maintenance and expansion.
Looking ahead, the government is also tackling the persistent issue of traffic congestion affecting Nairobi's rapidly expanding outskirts. President Ruto specifically addressed the heavy flow experienced by commuters living in areas like Ngong, Kiserian, Rongai, and Karen.
To alleviate this burden, plans are underway for the construction of a new road connecting Bomas of Kenya to Rongai and Kiserian scheduled for the next year.
Furthermore, the strategic Bomas- Karen - Ngong - Bul Bul - Kiserian corridor is earmarked for expansion into a dual carriageway, a transformative step expected to significantly ease transit times and improve the quality of life for thousands of Nairobi residents utilizing those southern routes daily.
