Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi has confirmed that the government has set aside three acres of land in Upper Kabete for the construction of a new African Union campus in Nairobi. The announcement follows a briefing Mudavadi received from Dr. Huyam Salih, Director of the African Union's Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR), regarding progress on the project and preparations for construction.
Mudavadi described the campus as a purpose-built facility designed to bring together multiple AU entities under one integrated site. The institutions expected to relocate or operate from the campus include AU-IBAR, the AU Transition Mission in Somalia, the Pan African University Institute for Basic Sciences, Technology and Innovation (PAUSTI), the AU Institute for Remittances (AIR), and the AU Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) Eastern Africa Regional Office and Centre of Excellence.
Plans for the development aim to consolidate operations currently spread across various locations in Nairobi, to improve coordination and shared services among the AU bodies. The project positions Nairobi to serve as a more central point for continental diplomatic engagement and policy work. The land allocation in Upper Kabete marks the initial step toward the construction of the campus.
