Administrative officers are monitoring the transition of the pioneer Grade 10 cohort as Kenyan schools reopen for the first term of the 2026 academic year.

National Government Administrative Officers have commenced field monitoring across Kenya to oversee the reopening of schools for the 2026 academic year. The exercise focuses on the enforcement of the 100% Transition Policy as the pioneer Competency-Based Education cohort moves into Grade 10. While the majority of learners returned to institutions on January 5, those entering the new senior school level are scheduled to report to their respective stations starting January 12.

The Ministry of Education has released 44.2 billion shillings in capitation funds to support operations for the first term. Of this amount, 26 billion shillings is allocated to secondary education to facilitate the admission of the incoming Grade 10 students. Field reports indicate that administrative officers are working to ensure all learners, including those in under-resourced areas, progress to the next level of basic education without exclusion.

A secondary placement review window remains open until January 9 for families seeking to adjust senior school assignments based on subject pathways or institutional capacity. Government directives have instructed school heads to maintain fee compliance and ensure that no student is turned away during the transition period. The Kenya Education Management Information System will be used to track physical reporting and enrollment data in real time as the new senior secondary structure is implemented.

Safety protocols for student travel and the maintenance of inclusive learning environments have been cited as priorities for the administrative teams on the ground. These officers are tasked with identifying and resolving bottlenecks that could hinder the movement of students from junior school into the three specialized pathways of senior secondary education.
