President William Ruto leads the disbursement of 220 million shillings to 8,000 youth at Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium as regional infrastructure projects including Moi Stadium upgrades commence.

The Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Kisumu County served as the primary venue today for the national government to distribute 220 million shillings in business grants. The funds, part of the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) project, reached over 8,000 young entrepreneurs from Kisumu, Siaya, and Homa Bay counties. Each beneficiary received an initial tranche of 25,000 shillings following the completion of a mandatory four-day business skills training program held across 105 wards in the Nyanza region.

The disbursement ceremony took place at the 30,000-seater sports complex in Mamboleo, a facility that has become a central hub for major regional events since its completion by Sinohydro Corporation and Gragab Agencies. The stadium features a FIFA-standard football pitch and an eight-lane running track, providing the necessary scale for large-scale public gatherings of this nature. According to the state department for MSMEs, the financial package is structured with 22,000 shillings sent to mobile business accounts and 3,000 shillings channeled into the Haba na Haba NSSF savings scheme.

This event coincides with a significant shift in the regional construction landscape. As Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium hosts these high-capacity public functions, the nearby Moi International Stadium has been formally handed over to contractors for a separate 800 million shilling modernization project. The Ministry of Defence is overseeing that upgrade, which aims to transform the older venue into a 10,000-seater international facility. During the construction period at Moi Stadium, Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium will serve as the primary host for football league matches and other major sporting fixtures in Kisumu.

The NYOTA project, financed by the World Bank, is currently in its third phase of capital distribution. The program targets vulnerable youth between the ages of 18 and 29, with an extension to 35 years for persons with disabilities. Beyond the immediate cash grants, the government is rolling out an On-the-Job Experience component through the Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Project. This initiative integrates youth from informal settlements into public infrastructure works, providing technical training and workplace exposure to improve long-term employability.

In Kisumu specifically, 35 wards participated in the recent training cycle. Local officials confirmed that beneficiaries from areas such as Manyatta, Nyawita, and Kibuye are expected to receive a second tranche of 25,000 shillings in a subsequent phase, bringing the total individual support to 50,000 shillings. The integration of financial literacy and technical skills training is intended to ensure that the capital is used effectively to grow sustainable small enterprises within the local economy.

Construction activity in the region remains high, with the national government also announcing plans for a 1.1 billion shilling investment in nearby Gusii Stadium and renovations at Kisii Airport. These projects, coupled with the ongoing works at Moi Stadium, form a broader infrastructure strategy to enhance sporting and commercial facilities across the Nyanza and Western clusters. The reliance on Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium as a functional, completed venue during this period of extensive renovation elsewhere highlights the facility's strategic importance to the county's infrastructure network.
