India has officially set a timeline for the commencement of its high speed rail network, with the first phase of the bullet train scheduled to enter service on August 15, 2027. The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited, the agency overseeing the project, confirmed that the initial operations will be concentrated on a specific segment in Gujarat. This first run will connect Surat and Bilimora, serving as the inaugural stretch of the larger Mumbai to Ahmedabad corridor.
The project utilizes Japanese Shinkansen technology and is designed to allow trains to reach speeds of up to 320 kilometres per hour. While the 2027 date focuses on the Gujarat section, construction continues across the 508 kilometre route that links the financial hub of Mumbai with Ahmedabad. To date, the project has achieved significant milestones in bridge construction over several rivers and the completion of over 300 kilometres of pier work.
Financial and technical cooperation for the corridor is provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency. The government intends to expand the service in stages as different sections of the viaduct and track laying are completed. This phased approach allows for rigorous safety testing and technical trials on the Surat to Bilimora line before the full corridor opens to the public.
Local authorities noted that land acquisition, which previously slowed progress in certain districts, is now largely complete. This has allowed contractors to accelerate work on the elevated stations and the undersea tunnel section near Mumbai. The August 2027 launch is timed to coincide with India’s Independence Day, marking the formal introduction of high speed rail technology to the country's transport infrastructure.
