Great Lakes University Council Approves Design for New Kisumu Campus

The governing council and management of Great Lakes University of Kisumu (GLUK) have formally approved architectural designs for a new campus in Kisumu County. Lead architect Professor Alfred Omenya confirmed the institutional decision, which clears the way for technical planning phases.

The institution operates as a private university in Kenya, having grown from community health programs into a multi-disciplinary learning center. The approved designs focus on an integrated administrative and academic environment designed to serve expanding academic faculties.

The primary administrative building features a modern four-storey curved facade clad in structural glass curtain walls and decorative exterior columns. Renderings display an open central archway entrance, dedicated drop-off lanes, and landscaped green zones along vehicular approaches.

The overall master plan incorporates sustainable architectural strategies tailored to local environmental conditions. Interconnected paved pathways link the main administration block directly with outer courtyard areas, parking facilities, and surrounding secondary structures.

The layout separates pedestrian routes from motor traffic, which improves overall campus circulation and user safety. Dedicated green spaces are positioned between buildings to encourage natural airflow, when ambient temperatures rise during peak summer periods.

Professor Omenya, an environmental architect and academic, leads the design team overseeing the institutional master plan. The design emphasizes durable structural materials, passive thermal regulation, and low-maintenance exterior surfaces suited for long-term utility.

Great Lakes University of Kisumu (GLUK) originally grew out of the Tropical Institute of Community Health and Development (TICH). The institution has progressively built its presence across western Kenya, while expanding its research footprint in health and social sciences.

The new building will serve administrative functions and provide modern spaces for institutional governance. Building designs account for future expansion, which allows additional modules to join the main structure as student enrollments increase.

Kisumu continues to see growth in tertiary education infrastructure and supporting urban real estate development. The campus development will enhance institutional capacity for GLUK, as higher education providers strengthen their permanent footprints in western Kenya.

Structural specifications incorporate energy-efficient lighting networks, rainwater harvest features, and natural day-lighting solutions throughout internal spaces. Glazed facades are arranged to minimize direct solar heat gain, which reduces total energy demand for mechanical cooling systems.

The administrative building includes multi-level floor plans designed for executive suites, boardrooms, and operational departments. Internal circulation cores feature central stairwells and elevator shafts that ensure access for staff, students, and visitors across all levels.
