New KSh 50M Maungu Market Completed in Taita Taveta

The government has completed construction work on the Maungu market facility located in Voi Constituency, Taita Taveta County.

Principal Secretary (PS) Dr. Raymond Omollo confirmed the completion, highlighting the progress under the national Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP).

The modern two-storey facility required an investment of KSh 50 million to construct. It replaces informal open-air trading setups, providing sheltered and structured trading stalls for local vendors.

President Ruto previously visited the site during a coastal development tour to inspect progress on the structure. The facility forms part of a broader national initiative, aimed at constructing 400 fresh produce markets across various counties.

The new complex accommodates more than 200 traders within designated operational zones. Vendors selling fresh agricultural produce, textiles, and general merchandise now occupy dedicated stalls inside the completed building.

Designed to serve Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), the facility incorporates essential amenities to support daily commerce. Upper levels feature administrative offices and a boardroom, alongside dedicated spaces for community management functions.

Facilities within the trading venue include food courts, an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) room, and specialized spaces for nursing mothers. Secure revenue collection offices are also located within the complex.

Local leadership in Taita Taveta County emphasized that the facility directly addresses long-standing operational challenges facing rural traders. Strategic placement near the busy Mombasa-Nairobi highway corridor enhances economic activity for surrounding communities.

Contractual agreements for the construction specified that 80 percent of technical and manual jobs went to local residents. Building materials were also sourced from local suppliers, which supported small businesses across the sub-county.

Small-scale agricultural producers in Voi Constituency previously suffered substantial post-harvest losses due to adverse weather conditions. Direct exposure to torrential rain and extreme sunlight routinely disrupted daily commerce and damaged perishable goods.

With modern storage bays and shaded selling areas, traders can now preserve agricultural inventory far longer. Protected spaces shield valuable commodities, which helps stabilize vendor incomes throughout the year.

Government officials noted that expanding market infrastructure nationwide remains a core priority for sustainable development. Modernized facilities allow informal vendors to transition smoothly into structured, commercial environments that foster growth.

National government line agencies collaborated closely with Taita Taveta County authorities during execution. Joint oversight ensured structural standards met prescribed safety guidelines, while maintaining strict adherence to project timelines.

Traders operating along the main transit corridor have begun shifting into designated stalls inside the primary structure. Local transport operators and service providers are adjusting routes, which improves overall market accessibility for consumers.

The completion of the Maungu trading hub strengthens commercial exchange along the main transport network. County officials anticipate higher transaction volumes, as regional travel and trade activity continue to expand.

Physical infrastructure at the site features concrete paving, heavy-duty perimeter fencing, and high-capacity water storage systems. Integrated utility connections ensure uninterrupted power supply and adequate sanitation facilities across both levels.

This project delivery aligns with public infrastructure commitments made to residents in Voi Constituency. Traders now look forward to operating within a clean, organized, and secure commercial environment.

The Ministry of Interior and National Administration monitored safety and administrative compliance throughout the building phase. Public administration officers worked alongside local committees, ensuring community needs were fully addressed.
