President William Ruto traveled to Voi Town on Friday to lay the foundation stone for the Voi Modern Market. This project represents a KSh300 million investment in the regionβs retail and wholesale infrastructure.
The new facility is designed to address longstanding challenges faced by small-scale businessmen and farmers in the Coast region. According to the President, the market will eventually accommodate more than 1,000 traders once construction is complete.
A central feature of the architectural plan is the inclusion of specialized cold storage units. These facilities are intended to help farmers preserve their produce for longer periods.
Post-harvest losses have remained a persistent issue for Kenyan agriculturalists, who often see a large portion of their harvest rot before reaching a buyer. The government expects these new cooling systems to provide a buffer against such waste.
During the ceremony, President Ruto was seen inspecting the site and reviewing the blue-prints for the three-story structure. The design shows a rectangular building with an open central courtyard to allow for natural lighting and ventilation.
Government officials present at the site noted that the market will include modern amenities, such as improved sanitation and secure stalls. These additions are part of a broader national strategy to upgrade trading spaces in urban centers.
Taita Taveta residents have waited for an upgrade to the existing trading facilities for several years. The current market stalls often struggle with overcrowding and poor drainage during the rainy seasons.
The Voi project is one of several markets currently under construction across the country. The national government has partnered with various county administrations to fund these sites, seeking to move traders from the roadsides into organized spaces.
By providing a central hub for commerce, the administration hopes to streamline tax collection and improve the working environment for the informal sector. Traders at the site expressed hope that the construction will stay on the projected timeline.
The project site was active with laborers and machinery as the President performed the ceremonial stone laying. Contractors are expected to prioritize local labor for the duration of the building phase.
This development follows similar launches in other parts of the country, where the focus has remained on the "hustler" economy. The Voi Modern Market is positioned to become a major commercial node for the Taita Taveta County.
As the ceremony concluded, President Ruto emphasized that the facility must serve the needs of the common mwananchi. The local community is now watching the site closely, waiting for the first bricks to rise from the foundation.
