President William Ruto has pledged that a dedicated civilian terminal at Wajir International Airport will be operational before 2026 closes, alongside state funding for a new university.

President William Ruto has pledged that Wajir International Airport (WIA) will have a fully operational civilian terminal before the end of 2026.

The announcement, made during a state development visit to the region, aims to resolve long-standing operational overlaps between civil aviation and military functions at the strategic northern installation.

State infrastructure officials previously noted that separating military and civilian operations at the airfield is essential to ease passenger movement and improve overall operational efficiency.

The expansion works at the airport form part of a broader infrastructure push in Wajir County, which includes the recent construction of a 10,000-seater sports stadium and a new local State Lodge.

In addition to the aviation terminal deadline, President Ruto committed national government funding to construct the first public university within the county.

The ministry of interior recently highlighted that these multi-billion shilling projects are intended to integrate the historically marginalised region into the national transport and education grid.

The State Department for Aviation and Aerospace Development (SDAAD) has already committed resources and personnel to ensure the ongoing airfield expansions, including runway and taxiway rehabilitation, progress according to schedule.

Local leaders have welcomed the infrastructure commitments, stating that a functional civilian terminal will open the region to expanded commercial trade and smoother regional transport connectivity.
