The Managing Director of the Kenya Ports Authority, Captain William Ruto, suffered injuries in a road crash that occurred in Taita-Taveta County on Friday.
The accident, which took place while Ruto was on the road with his family, also led to the death of his daughter. Two additional family members were injured in the same incident.
Medical teams at Mombasa Hospital are currently treating the injured, with reports indicating that their condition is stable.
On Saturday morning, the KPA Corporate Communication Division issued a statement detailing the events. The statement expressed deep sadness over the accident. It noted that the family had been travelling when the crash happened the previous evening.
“We are deeply saddened to announce that Capt Ruto was involved in a tragic road accident yesterday evening while travelling with his family. Captain Ruto and the rest of his family are currently in stable condition and under close medical supervision. Regrettably, his daughter did not survive the accident. We extend our thoughts and deepest condolences to Capt Ruto and his family during this time of immense grief. We are cooperating with the relevant authorities as they establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. We will continue to provide updates as appropriate and as more information becomes available,” read the statement.
The transfer of Ruto and his family members to Mombasa Hospital was facilitated by the governors of Mombasa and Taita-Taveta. Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir and Taita-Taveta Governor Andrew Mwadime provided the necessary support for the move.
KPA concluded its statement by thanking its staff, partners, stakeholders and the general public for their support and cooperation.
Captain Ruto has been leading the Kenya Ports Authority, which is the government body responsible for the management of ports in Kenya.
The authority oversees the Port of Mombasa, a major infrastructure asset that facilitates the bulk of Kenya's international trade and serves as a gateway for goods entering the East African region.
This leadership role involves direct involvement in decisions affecting port operations and infrastructure maintenance, which are essential for the country's economic infrastructure.
The location of the accident in Taita-Taveta County places it on one of Kenya's key transport corridors. The county's roads connect the inland areas to the coastal ports, making them important for logistics and infrastructure-related traffic.
With the details of the crash still being established, the KPA has assured all parties of its full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.
