New Housing Units in Murang'a Near Completion as Makenji Site Expands

The landscape of Murang’a County is undergoing a physical shift as the Makenji Affordable Housing Project (APH) enters its final phases of construction. Work on the site has accelerated following the initial foundation stone ceremony led by President Ruto in February 2024. This development represents one of several active sites currently being managed across the country.

The architectural layout of the Makenji project consists of nine separate blocks. These structures are designed to house 220 modern residential units. To accommodate different household sizes, the project includes three specific typologies. There are 60 three-bedroom units, 100 two-bedroom units, and 60 studio apartments available.

The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is managing the site through coordinated oversight. This department provides the security framework necessary for round-the-clock operations. Their involvement ensures that the environment remains conducive for both technical staff and manual laborers.

Beyond the brick-and-mortar aspect, the Makenji site functions as a localized economic engine. The construction activity has opened up immediate employment opportunities for youth within the county. These roles range from specialized masonry and electrical work to general site maintenance.

Local businesses are also seeing a direct impact from the ongoing works. Hardware stores and timber yards in the vicinity are supplying the bulk of the materials required for the final finishes. This logistical chain supports transporters who move supplies to the site daily.

The community involvement extends to the informal sector as well. Food vendors have established their presence near the site gates to serve the hundreds of workers employed there. This steady circulation of income within the town helps sustain small-scale traders during the construction period.

Community engagement remains a core pillar of the implementation strategy. Regular consultations between site managers and the residents ensure that the project integrates well with existing neighborhoods. This approach aims to address the diverse housing needs of the growing Murang’a population.

As the buildings move toward a state of readiness, the focus is shifting toward internal fittings and utility connections. The progress at Makenji serves as a template for other regional housing projects currently under the national infrastructure banner.
